This twitter developer chat was focused on the recent beta talent tree overhaul announced for Cataclysm. Lots of information came out including drastic changes to the paladin class. A lot of the answers had to do with the fact that a couple classes aren’t very done in the current beta build that everyone has been poring over.
Some highlights:
- paladins will be using a new Holy Power resource system in addition to mana
- all death knights will gain Runic Empowerment via trainers for all specs
- no planned hard cap for the new Mastery stat
- still no guild housing
The full categorized round-up is after the break.

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW.com’s daily Q&A column where the WoW.com team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mike Sacco will be your host today.
Bro. Bro. You gotta check out the ‘Clysm, bro. You in the ‘Clysm beta? I heard Orgrimmar got a hella sweet new bar. Can you say “shots,” bro? Say it, bro. Bro. Brorgrimmar. Bromeo. Brosef Stalin. Broseidon, king of the brocean.
Alex asked:
“Regarding the Pirates rep grind (killing Booty Bay guards): I plan to be exalted with Pirates AND Booty Bay at the same time (by freeing Knot in Dire Maul countless of times). Will new Goblin quests in Cata will hurt my Pirates rep?”
The playable goblins are their own faction, not the Steamwheedle Cartel. Their quests shouldn’t affect your rep with either the Bloodsail Buccaneers or the Steamwheedle Cartel. But changes to Stranglethorn Vale and the rest of the world might. I’d get your kicks in now.

Well, just when we thought we knew what Blizzard was doing with priests, this week the devs have thrown us a curve ball in the form of a new talent build on the Cataclysm beta. I have but one, ultimate question:
How many talent previews must a priest walk down?
Do you know the answer? Perhaps Fox Van Allen and Dawn Moore of Spiritual Guidance infamy can assist you in the calculations. Remember: don’t panic.

The Cataclysm beta client now has the 31-point talent trees implemented, and though they are incomplete in some cases, they feel far better than the earlier, bloated versions that were available. Along with the new changes come a lot of thoughts around the blogosphere regarding talents and what they’re shaping up to be:
- Forever a Noob shares some concerns with the mechanics of the new talent trees.
- The Mental Shaman has some immediate reactions to the news.
- World of Matticus clears up the new talents and shares some thoughts on priests.
- Restokin has some suggestions for druid talent trees.

Every week, Raid Rx will help you quarterback your healers to victory! Your host is Matt Low, the grand pooh-bah of World of Matticus and a founder of No Stock UI, a WoW blog for all things UI-, macro- and addon-related.
First, I just want to say that members of my guild and I scored ourselves a set of drake mounts from Glory of the Icecrown Raider. Took a few weeks, but we managed to pull it off. Hard modes and other achievements are an excellent way to keep your healing in form!
Anyway, those experiences can come at a later time. Some big announcements this week about talents! Have you seen the new looks yet? They’re by no means finalized. We’re still months away from anything resembling completion. Many talents have been removed from the tree entirely.

Cataclysm Beta: Entering Deepholm

The latest build of the Cataclysm beta opened Deepholm, Azeroth’s elemental plane of earth, for questing and leveling. Understandably, the big question on everybody’s mind was “how exactly do we get there?” It’s underground, after all, in another dimension.
Well, as it turns out, it involves a certain orc shaman, a particularly large whirlpool, and a very brave flying mount. Check out the incredibly epic entry into Deepholm in our video after the break, and then try to imagine how anything else in the expansion can top that flight — or that zone.

Cataclysm Beta: Death knight talents and specializations

The huge, earthshaking 31-point talent overhaul has hit the Cataclysm beta servers, taking the death knight class to new ground, back to the old vanilla era of 31-point trees. It may be for this reason that Blizzard’s specifically said that our trees are far from done. With that in my mind, the trees and specialization skills we see can and will change pretty extensively between now and release. That said, there’s no harm and certainly some good to be had in sizing up the trees as they stand right now and seeing how they pan out.

Let me begin by telling you I had an Arcane Brilliance column about halfway done last week before a family health emergency intervened, preventing me from finishing it. The column was going to be all about predicting what the new revamped talent trees were going to be like. Now that Cataclysm beta build 12479 has dropped upon us like manna in the desert, the entirety of that now-ancient text is so outdated as to be worthless. Let me assure you that it was witty, and brilliant, and possibly mankind’s greatest written work — art of such singular value that small children would have been taught of it from textbooks with my picture upon their covers. But, alas, now it is gone, relegated forever to a remote corner of my hard drive, never to be seen by human eyes. The literary world mourns.
Still, I was able to salvage one small fragment of it. It is but one of a batch of haiku I wrote about Improved Polymorph. I will reprint it here, because whatever else this monumental beta build has altered, my passion for this new talent remains.
improved polymorph
flaming warlock sheep corpses
snuffleupagus
On second thought, perhaps it’s best that no more of that sees the light of day.
Anyway, let’s move on the rest of the awesomeness.

Cataclysm Beta: New talent trees for paladins

With the Light as his strength, Gregg Reece of The Light and How to Swing It faces down the demons of the Burning Legion, the undead of the Scourge — and soon, an entire flight of black dragons.
Last night, Blizzard released the new talent tree system onto the beta realms for people to take a gander at and test out. Each class is at various stages of done-ness, with some needing pruning, others needing tuning and still others just need another iteration or two before truly being ready. Paladins fall into that last category, along with three other classes.
Here are a couple of excerpts from the beta patch notes, with bold added for emphasis:
Cataclysm Beta Patch Notes – Build 12479…
Paladins
* We are in the process of overhauling many paladin talents, spells and abilities. Expect updates in upcoming patches.
Things like more healing abilities for holy, Holy Shield moving from a maintained ability to a tanking cooldown, and three new planned but unimplemented attack abilities for retribution are all in the pipeline, as well as a shakeup of the talents we’ve already been provided. So, without further ado, I present a first draft of the paladin talent trees.
